Biochar is obtained from torrefaction, an innovative thermochemical biomass conversion process which has seen a rapid development over the last few years. Biomass torrefaction yields three different product fraction: solid, liquid and gaseous, the exact proportion of each depending upon the operation conditions. The solid fraction, biochar, is much more than a possible alternative to fossil fuels. It can be used to develop biosourced materials relevant in several industrial sectors:
- Soil Amendment
- Activated carbon
- Composite materials
- Combustion and energy production
Innofibre recently acquired a pilot torrefaction unit with input capacity of 125 kg/h. It is available to all companies and laboratories interested in adding value to their biomass or to directly obtain biochar. Over the years and projects, Innofibre has developed the necessary knowledge to add value to several residual biomass, with particular emphasis on obtaining the maximal value from every component.
